New page

== FOSS4G 2016 Call for Papers for the Academic Track==

As in previous FOSS4G conferences the FOSS4G 2016 Academic Track provides a strong basis for collaboration among researchers, developers, users, and practitioners carrying out research and development in
the geospatial field using open source geospatial software, standards.
We encourage academic papers describing:
= the use of open source geospatial software, standards, and data, in and for scientific research, as well as
= academic endeavours to conceptualize, create, assess, and teach open source geospatial software and data.
To submit a paper please register here. Please note that this is a different process from the regular sessions. If you would like to provide support as a reviewer please contact one of the chairs listed below.

=== Format ===

Presentations are the heart of the conference. We expect to have around 200 presentations during the conference showing the uses of open-source geospatial software in various fields and benefits of open-source geospatial software. We will be having 6~8 parallel streams in a range of subjects from diverse fields. Each individual presentations will be allowed about 20 minutes and 5 minutes for Q&A.

Presentations may cover any aspect of the development and use of open source geospatial software — some suggestions are given below. Presentations will be 20 minutes with additional 5 minutes for Q&A.

The conference program will run in parallel tracks over three days. The presentation proposals received will be judged by the program committee and the FOSS4G community as a whole. From this, the committee will create a program with structured tracks, designed to provide guidance on content to new and previous attendees.

=== Submissions ===

Submissions can be made at https://proposals.2016.foss4g.org/

Please note: there is a separate call for submissions of full papers for peer-review and academic publication in our Academic Presentation process (see the Academic Track CFP page: TODO FILL OUT THE PROPER LINK).

=== Topics of Interest ===

FOSS4G will, as always, be the premier showcase event for new applications, projects, case studies, business perspectives and training for free and open source geospatial software.

In addition to catering to the existing FOSS4G community, attendance is being encouraged from anyone considering using open source and geospatial software for the first time. The organizing committee is therefore keen to receive content which supports new users.

Proposals are invited on any FOSS4G-related subject. However the following list may help to provide some guidance on areas likely to be of interest to attendees:

* Case Studies: Relate your experiences
* Benchmarks: Comparisons between packages
* Business Cases: building the economic case
* Visualization: effective presentation of information.
* Disaster Response: software, case studies, outcomes
* Development: new development in projects
* Hacks and Mashes: novel solutions to all our problems
* Collaboration: data collection, data sharing, and open standards,
* New data: handling new data models and formats (e.g. 3D, temporal and “big data”)

=== Important Dates ===

Significant dates to note for various submissions are as follows. Please see the full calendar for other important dates.

* 21st January 2016 — Call for presentations and workshops opens.
* 21st March 2016 — Call for presentations and workshops closes.
