Code Sprint - what's that?
A code sprint is usually organized by a group that is using an open source project and wants to see something done. They fly the developers to a single location and feed them for a couple of days with the necessities of the hacking life (internet, caffeine, electricity). The communication that happens from face to face hacking usually lasts the project for a year or more. You see this a lot in projects like Drupal etc...

For map and more details see

More than 100 attendees are expected!
Motivation and Direction
A day, a code base, and your imagination?

Projects can use the time and venue for organizational discussions, development roadmaps, and group resolution of thorny issues in their code bases.
Key Accomplishments
* More transparent decision making on road map. Road maps are now created regularly for each quarter, with at most three items, devs vote up-front for items on mailing list and discuss via IRC
* interweaving Mapbender client side with jQuery. This results in more stability, less and concise code, better performance and user experience (for example slippy WMS map)
* relying on jQuery UI for creating widgets like datatables or or dialogs. Results in less code, easier development of new functionality, better user experience, better customization with jQuery UI CSS framework theme roller
* creation of a core JavaScript API
* created a foundation for technical documentation
* two successful GSoC projects, one student is now a regular committer, a GSoC student from 2008 returned
* a lot of great code sprints, like weekends with 10-15 devs!
* regular IRC meetings, we meet Mondays and I believe we never missed a date last year! About 5 attendees average

Areas for Improvement
* we didn't succeed in showing Mapbender's qualities to OSGeo or a wider audience in general. We need to be more confident in marketing, especially outside of Germany. Maybe FOSS4G in Barcelona will be an opportunity.
* unit testing didn't take off as we hoped it would.
* documentation is not as complete as we wanted it to be.
* the installation and update process has been improved, but is still not as easy as we wanted it to be.
* more consistent workflow of administration interfaces
* due to large refactoring last year backwards compatibility suffered a little and updates were tricky. Be patient with us, we learned a lot and this year will be much smoother.

Opportunities to Help
* volunteers to maintain documentation, user manuals, tutorials.
* more community feedback, we are curious about what OSGeo folks think about Mapbender
* we could need some input on client side (JS) unit testing.
* people with UI design experience and advanced CSS knowledge
* as long as we do not have enough unit tests, we need volunteers to do manual testing
* we could use a financial boost to address technical debt.

Outlook for 2010
* Rely more on other (OSGeo) software, reduce Mapbender core
** we want to get closer to OpenLayers, we looked at Mapstraction and maybe this will be a good way to align our API to the OpenLayers API
** maybe use server side code from GeoPrisma or MapFish
** create interface to Geonetwork
** integration of an SVG lib like RaphaelJS
* Reduce technical debt
** rock solid documentation and stable API
** unit testing
* Enthusiasm in representing Mapbender at some international fairs

After two successful years, we'll continue the OSGeo "hacking" event in Bolsena in an Italian monastery (see map location, and videos: 2008-video and 2009-video). The monastery is overlooking Lago Bolsena and offers space to about 25 people in small bedrooms :-) . It is one of the coolest places for such an event. Quiet, isolated, simple and serene. There's a good wireless and wired internet connection, further improved this year. It should be perfect for SVN, IRC and mail. Have a look yourself, including looking at the photo gallery.
For what the food concerns, we will have a cook who will take care of us :-) . There's a large dining space, but we will eat outside overlooking the lake if weather permits (very likely in June).

The all inclusive cost will be 500 Euro per person for the full week. You can stay all seven days and food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) is included in the price. As last year, we will go out for a city visit and a dinner on one of the evenings (also included).

The event will take place during the whole week (7 days), although the emphasis will probably be Monday to Friday for most participants.
* Back to the main OSGeo Google Summer of Code 2009 wiki page.

OSGeo Google Summer of Code 2009
The Open Source Geospatial Foundation would like to extend a welcome to all SoC students. On this page you will find links to a host of ideas organized by project. You will find ideas ranging from the depths of computer science graph theory to the heights of visualization. One thing all these ideas have in common is lots and lots of spatial data.

These ideas are *only* to motivate you, and serve as example of the kind of hills we want to charge up. Your own ideas are more than welcomed - they are encouraged. We view you as the next wave of open source leaders; show us what you've got.

If you need more information on how to apply you can contact all the mentoring organisations via soc at lists.osgeo.org

* There is a Google SoC flyer to look at and post in appropriate places.

What to expect during the summer?
Be prepared to be in constant communication with your mentors and project
You and your mentors will decide on the specifics, but we will expect you and your mentor to communicate *a lot*. Part of the idea of SoC is to intergrate you into the developer community, so you should get involved from the start. The more you communicate the easier it will be. Don't be afraid that the mentors will request your phone number. It is only to make sure that we can reach you, in case of problems.

Weekly reports
Yes, every week we expect to see a report that at least answers the following questions:
# What did you get done this week?
# What do you plan on doing next week?
# Are you blocked on anything?

If you want, feel free to write *more*. But three sentences is the bare minimum. *IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU SEND YOUR PROGRESS REPORTS ON TIME*, if you don't send this email your mentors will start to get twitchy, and *especially* if they don't get any responses to their emails / don't see you in IRC. Twitchy mentors is not what we want. If you are blocked by finals, that's cool. We have all studied at some point, just tell us about it, be honest. If you don't know how to proceed and your mentor isn't answering *definitely* tell about it. The SoC project admins will always be available. Basically the point is that you open up the communication channels, and keep them open. That way you will have a super summer, and get paid ;)

Last year this weekly report proved to be very popular among the students and mentors alike, so we will keep it up.

Wiki page
In addition to weekly reports we ask you to maintain a wiki page for your project. You should store your weekly reports there and add other information, like how to compile and test your program. If applicable add screenshots and other nice info.

* FOSSGIS e.V.
* OSGeo DACH

Rechtsform, Konto

* FOSSGIS e.V. (FOSSGIS e.V.)

Ziele
* Kontaktstelle für neue Mitglieder und Sponsoren
* Führung eines Regionalbüros mit Konto, Telefon, Ansprechpartner
* Übersetzung von Dokumenten, Inhalten, Webseiten und Lokalisierung von Software (Anpassung an örtliche Besonderheiten)
* Lösungen im deutschsprachigen Raum bewerben
* Erstellung von regionalisierten Software-Paketen
* Training, Support und Entwicklung von e-Learning Inhalten in deutscher Sprache
* Förderung von offenen Standards und freien Zugang zu räumlichen Daten im deutschsprachigen Umfeld.
* Förderung der OSGeo Foundation durch Präsentationen, Informationsveranstaltungen, Messestände, etc.

Komitees

September 2008 bekanntgegeben.

Press release

Kelima dewan direksi pertama OSGeo terdiri

* Arnulf Christl - Mapbender, CCGIS, Jerman;
* Chris Holmes - GeoServer/GeoTools, The Open Planning Project, Amerika Serikat;
* Gary Lang - MapGuide, Autodesk, Amerika Serikat;
* Markus Neteler - GRASS, Istituto Trentino Di Cultura, Italia;
* Frank Warmerdam - GDAL/OGR, Kanada.

Mengenai Lembaga Open Source Geospatial
