OSGeo Advocates are authoritative OSGeo personalities who have volunteered to talk on behalf of the [http://osgeo.org OSGeo foundation]. Advocates should be able to speak well, even better if they are entertaining.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of conferences around the world which have an interest in seeing presentations from authoritative speakers, with deep insights into topics related to Open Source Geospatial Software. Luckily, OSGeo is fortunate to draw extensive membership from around the world, and has access to such authoritative figures within most countries.

= Process for becoming an OSGeo Advocate =

Anyone fitting one of the [[OSGeo_Advocate#Understanding_OSGeo_roles|OSGeo Advocate categories]], may put themselves forward as an OSGeo Advocate. To do so, you will need to:
* Create an OSGeo wiki account, to edit this wiki (See "login" link in top right of this page).

= Expenses =

This OSGeo Advocate list has been designed to help event organisors find local authoritative speakers. Events wishing to import keynote speakers should anticipate covering expenses of these speakers. Note that OSGeo is a volunteer driven organisation without paid positions of authority and OSGeo doesn't budget to cover travel expenses. Note also that unlike proprietary companies, a company promoting Open Source software don't earn license fees when a delegate is convinced to start using the free software.

When budgeting for keynote speakers expect to cover the following expenses:
* Travel, typically including:
** airfare
** visa
** travel insurance (including overseas medical, trip disruption, lost luggage, etc)
** meals during travel
** transit costs to local and host airports
* Accommodation
** standard 3 or 4 star hotel within walking distance of the event
** high speed internet
* Per diem costs
** 3 meals a day
* Speakers fee
** typically $US 1000 per day. (Note that OSGeo volunteer speakers usually have a full time job and will be loosing wages for the duration of the event)

Individual speakers may waive any of these costs if attracted to the event for other reasons, and final costs are to be negotiated with the selected speaker.

The OSGeo Korean Chapter is pleased to announce that we have been selected to host the FOSS4G 2014 international conference. The conference is planned for Seoul in September 2014, and is expected to attract the leading users and developers in the open source geospatial community from not only South Korea but also all over the world.

Holding the FOSS4G conference - the biggest Opensource GIS event in the world - first time in the Asia will definitely bring countless benefits to the region and provide the geospatial communities, local business, and societies with the great opportunities to know the greatness of Opensource geospatial technologies.

Sanghee Shin, CEO at Gaia3D and Representative of OSGeo Korean Chapter explained his motivations for leading Seoul’s bid were to make Seoul the starting point of FOSS4G bigbang and widely spread out FOSS4G to the local and region via this conference. He said, “When I tried to introduce to Opensource GIS to South Korea in 2008, no one even tried to listen to my opinions. However, over five years passed and now the Government opened a bid for Opensource GIS R&D project in May 2014, meaning that Opensource GIS has a sign to become mega trend in South Korea. I’m absolutely sure that FOSS4G 2015 will ignite this trend.”

OSGeo Korean chapter has held FOSS4G Korea event every year since 2011 and the attendants of the event steadily grows. Especially, FOSS4G Korea events always come with SmartGeo expo, the biggest geospatial expo in South Korea, so many people from Government, universities, institutes, companies, and so on had a chance to attend FOSS4G Korea conference when they came to SmartGeo expo.

For the successful conference of FOSS4G 2015, KSIS(Korea Spatial Information Society), the organization with members of geospatial professional, researchers, students, and policy makers regarding geospatial field, closely cooperates with OSGeo Korean Chapter. Also, KAOS-G(Koeran Alliance OpenSource for Geospatial), community of various companies for Opensource GIS in South Korea actively helps OSGeo and KSIS for better FOSS4G 2015 event.

LOC of FOSS4G 2015 thinks FOSS4G Seoul 2015 conference could increase the awareness of Opensource GIS and raise the bar for Opensource GIS in South Korea and the experience and knowledge will spread out to the Asian countries from Seoul.

Especially, FOSS4G Korea events always come with SmartGeo expo, the biggest geospatial expo in South Korea, so many people from Government, universities, institutes, companies, and so on had a chance to attend FOSS4G Korea conference when they came to SmartGeo expo.

For the successful conference of FOSS4G 2015, KSIS(Korea Spatial Information Society), the organization with members of geospatial professional, researchers, students, and policy makers regarding geospatial field, closely cooperates with OSGeo Korean Chapter. Also, KAOS-G(Koeran Alliance OpenSource for Geospatial), community of various companies for Opensource GIS in South Korea actively helps OSGeo and KSIS for better FOSS4G 2015 event.

LOC of FOSS4G 2015 thinks FOSS4G Seoul 2015 conference could increase the awareness of Opensource GIS and raise the bar for Opensource GIS in South Korea and the experience and knowledge will spread out to the Asian countries from Seoul.

==OSGeo Korean Language Chapter Activity Report 2012==

*The OSGeo Korean Language Chapter was formed as an unofficial chapter in Feb 2008 and changed its status to an official OSGeo Local Chapter in March 2009. The OSGeo Korean Language Chapter had 249 members as of Dec 31st, 2012.

***The event was highly successful with around 90 ~ 110 participants. 3 keynote speeches and 8 presentations were delivered by great and smart people there and followed by Soju Party near Samsung station!!

*Regular Meetings
**2 times regular meetings
**Date: February and August, 2012
**Place: Seoul
**These meetings were followed by Open Source GIS schools held in Ewha Womans university supported by Ministry of Land, Transport and Marine Affairs.
**Our members shared knowledge & experiences around open source GIS in the regular meetings. Also we discussed the future activities of OSGeo Korean Language Chapter.

*Localizations & Translations
**Korean chapter carried out several localization & translations.
**QGIS menu, messages and manual were translated in Korean
**Started to translate QGIS, PostGIS, GeoServer and OpenLayers materials in Korean

**Korean chapter has been fully or partially involved in several open source related projects.
**KOPSS(Korea Planning Support System) Open API Project funded by KRIHS(Korean Research Institute of Human Settlement)
**"Open source software vs Private software: the understanding of open source software and private software and strategic approach choosing appropriate software" funded by KRIHS(Korean Research Institute of Human Settlement)
**Held open source GIS education programs funded by NECGIS(National Education Center for GIS)

*Outreach Activities
**Korean chapter has conducted several outreach activities including lecture, seminar and exchange programs.
**Outreach Lectures : LH Corp, KRIHS, KCSC(Korea Cadastral Survey Corp) and others
**Exchange Program : Dispatched 2 delegates to Tokyo, Japan to give keynote speech at FOSS4G 2012 Tokyo/Osaka

===Areas for Improvement===
*Still, too much dependency on too small key members. More active members should be required.
*Korean chapter is not still legal entity, therefore there are several limitations to do our activities. We need to change our status to legal entity in near future.
*Need to expand activities to international scale. Our chapter has very talented members however their activities are somewhat isolated here in Korea.
*We need to seek stable revenue source to run our chapter. Our chapter financial is highly dependent on limited donation sources.

===Opportunities to Help===
*We definitely need some speakers for FOSS4G Korea 2013. If anyone wants to vist Korea and deliver some precious speeches, please contact us anytime.
*We hope more open source GIS related event could be held here in Korea or in Asia region.

===Outlook for 2013===
*We may see very prosperous year in 2013. As awareness of open source GIS has increased rapidly here in Korea, many organizations got to know the importance of open source GIS software and desire to cooperate with our chapter.
*In 2013, we may attract more members to our chapter and could run our chapter in more systematic way. We hope that 2013 is the year that OSGeo Korean Chapter has started flourishing.
*We'll explore the possibility of hosing FOSS4G 2015 in Korea with other GIS related society like KSIS(Korean Spatial Information Society).
