We have started our build cycle for OSGeoLive 12.0, due to be released at the August 6th 2018, in time for FOSS4G 2018 at the end of August in Dar Es Salaam.

We are interested to know which version of ${"Application Id"} should be installed on OSGeoLive 12.0?

Version ${"v11.0"} was installed on OSGeoLive 11.0.

* Note that we will use Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic (to be released end of April 2018)
* Note that our installer feature freeze is 4 June 2018.

=What's in the OSGeo-Live 11.0 reboot?=

30 May 2017

In line with the OSGeo-Live reboot [1] we have identified the following actions:

We will only support a 64 bit distribution, (32 bit will be built but not tested or officially supported).

We will no longer provide:
* Windows installers,
* Write ups for OGC Standards,
* Write ups for libraries without a user interface

Stray projects: We haven't got a point of contact for these projects. If you know something about this project, and can help review docs, then please consider adopting the project. Without a volunteer, we will need to consider retiring them from OSGeo-Live. Work commitment is low, kudos and karma very high :)

The OSGeo-Live Project Steering Committee (PSC) is the official managing body of OSGeo-Live and is responsible for setting overall project direction. The committee is drawn from the OSGeo-Live community and is based on merit and interest.

==Decisions==
Decisions are based on voting using the following:
* +1 : For
* +0: Mildly for, but mostly indifferent
* 0: Indifferent
* -0: Mildly against, but mostly indifferent
* -1 : Strongly against. This is expected to be accompanied by a reason.

For most decisions, a motion is raised within one of the OSGeo-Live open forums (IRC, email list, etc) and those present vote and decide. Should a decision:
* Be strategic or impact many within OSGeo-Live,
* Or if there be contention in deciding, and after discussion at least one member is still strongly against the motion, by continuing to vote -1,
Then the motion should be referred to the PSC.

For motions presented to the PSC, a motion is considered passed when there are more PSC +1 votes than -1 votes, and either all PSC members have voted, or 4 days have passed. In the case of a tie, the PSC chair shall have 1.5 votes.

From the airport take the train S-Bahn S7 going to Wien Floridsdorf and exit
at Praterstern (~30min). Make sure to avoid the CAT as it doesn't bring you
to Praterstern and I consider it too costly for gaining just 10 minutes.

From Praterstern take the subway U-Bahn U2 going to Seestadt and exit at
Stadlau. Now either take a 15 minutes walk to the venue or take the bus
Autobus 86A going to Breitenleer Straße/Arnikaweg or 87A going to
Hermann-Gebauer-Straße and exit at Genochplatz.

On Wednesday evening we invite interested participants to a guided evening walk - "The City of Vienna at a glance". An on-site registration will be needed due to a limit number of 25 places.

The downtown tour introduces the imperial city, Vienna´s great history, its unique architecture, and todays life-style.

Meeting in front of St. Stephen´s Cathedral, Vienna’s main 900 years old landmark, we will stroll along Graben and Kohlmarkt, passing former court confectionary Demel and the most exclusive shops in Vienna. Crossing the courtyards of the Imperial Palace "Hofburg" you will hear about the great times of former Austrian monarchy, see where Empress Elizabeth (Sisi) married Emperor Franz Joseph, where the Vienna Boys’ Choir sings mass on Sunday, and where the famous white Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School perform. You will enjoy the great view from Heroes Square to some of the magnificent buildings of the famous Ringstraße. We will continue walking towards State Opera and the legendary hotel Sacher and will end the tour at Albertinaplatz.

However, to date (in 2014), only about half the applications are bundled as .deb files. In particular, most of the java based projects have not been bundled as .deb files.

The idea for this project is to take as many projects as possible through the process of bundling into .deb files, with a particular emphasis on solving java based projects. Ideally, the generation of the .deb files will be incorporated into the project's build process, and the .deb files will also be included into main Debian by the help of Debian GIS team (which ensures automatic migration to UbuntuGIS).

This project will be a challenge for anyone game to take it on, requiring a combination of research to identify and overcome existing stumbling blocks, researching of best practices in packaging, .deb packaging, liaising with projects, likely updating java software, creating install and build scripts (probably in bash shell), and probably a few more things as well.

The hurdles that have previously been limiting factors include:
* Most java projects have previously been built from Sun/Oracle version of Java, which could not be included in debian/ubuntu due to licence restrictions.
* The OpenJDK version of Java, which is bundled with Debian/Ubuntu historically had limitations, which seem to have been completely (or at least mostly) resolved. (The last version of OSGeo-Live was built with OpenJDK instead of Sun Java.
* There is a knowledge gap between Java communities and Debian packaging communities, with a lot of experience in each group, but very few who understand the requirements, processes and tools of both. To address this, we have mentors from each community to support the student.
* Some of the optional libraries (such as JAI) used within the java communities have licensing restrictions which have been incompatible with Debian packaging. Dependencies need to be understood and the alternative libraries/options put in place.

Theoretically, all these stumbling blocks can be resolved, which will be the challenge for the student taking on this task.

Besides creating Debian packages of new software some metapackages featuring the osgeolive packages should be created using the [http://blends.debian.org/blends/ Debian Blends framework].

* There is a knowledge gap between Java communities and Debian packaging communities, with a lot of experience in each group, but very few who understand the requirements, processes and tools of both. To address this, we have mentors from each community to support the student.
* Some of the optional libraries (such as JAI) used within the java communities have licensing restrictions which have been incompatible with Debian packaging. Dependencies need to be understood and the alternative libraries/options put in place.

Theoretically, all these stumbling blocks can be resolved, which will be the challenge for the student taking on this task.

Besides creating Debian packages of new software some metapackages featuring the osgeolive packages should be created using the [http://blends.debian.org/blends/| Blends framework].
