The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) has a long tradition of organizing code sprints for developers of Open Source GIS software.
(https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Category:Code_Sprints).

An international community/code sprint for OSGeo will take place Nov 17-19, 2020.

We expect about 80 developers from all over the world to come from various [https://www.osgeo.org/, OSGeo] projects. Whether desktop application, geospatial library, metadata catalog or web mapping: be sure to find products in the list that you use. The sprint is also an opportunity for your developers to meet with the core developers of the projects, get a deeper insight into the software and participate in the development.

This years' sprint will take place online.

In addition to the costs of providing the technical infrastructure and space, food and drink for the developers represents the main cost. Morning/afternoon meals and drinks during the day are planned. In addition, we hope to provide several evening meals and social events.

Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions are unstructured timeslots where people can self-organise themselves to discuss topics of interest.

During the [[FOSS4G 2019]] conference in Bucharest, there will be a number of spaces for people to hold Birds of a Feather sessions.

=== How to organize a BOF ===

BoF sessions are informal gatherings of people around a specific topic. BoF's can be held in: BoF rooms or taken off-site for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

While FOSS4G is provide space, but the setting up a bird-of-feather meetup is done informally using this wiki, twitter, or on site BoF board.

Online Karten im Internet wie zum Beispiel der wien.at-Stadtplan [0] sind heute aus unserem tägliche Leben nicht mehr wegzudenken. Vielfach vertrauen diese Anwendungen auf Freie und Open Source Software (FOSS) wie jene die nun in Wien weiterentwickelt werden. FOSS erlaubt es jedem die Software beliebig zu untersuchen, modifizieren und weiter zu verteilen.

Seit einigen Jahren organisiert die Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) [1] einen jährlichen Code Sprint sozusagen ein Come-Together des "C Tribes" der OSGeo Projekte. Dabei treffen sich die federführenden und verantwortlichen EntwicklerInnen von weit verbreiteten Projekten wie MapServer, QGIS, GRASS, GDAL, PostGIS, PDAL, pycsw, u.v.m., um neue Vorhaben zu diskutieren, sich auszutauschen, in praktischer, gemeinsamer Arbeit Code-Probleme zu lösen, usw. einfach um den Zusammenhalt dieser bedeutenden Communities zu stärken.

Nach Toronto [7], New York [6], Montreal [5], Island Wood [4], und Boston [3] wird der Code Sprint im Jahr 2014 erstmalig in Europa und zwar in Wien vom 24. bis 28. März 2014 Station machen [2]. Neben knapp 70 EntwicklernInnen die ihre Teilnahme für dieses Jahr bereits angekündigt haben werden mehr als die Hälfte der Mitglieder des OSGeo Foundation Board of Directors vertreten sein unter anderem der Vorsitzende Jeff McKenna.

A life without online maps in the internet like those of the wien.at-City map [0] cannot be imagined anymore. In many cases those applications rely on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) like the ones which will be worked on in Vienna. FOSS provides the rights to study, change and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose.

For several years the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) [1] has been organizing a yearly Code Sprint, a gathering of the "C Tribe" OSGeo projects. Leading developers of popular software projects like MapServer, QGIS, GRASS, GDAL, PostGIS, PDAL, pycsw, and many more get together to discuss new ideas, hack, decide, tackle large geospatial problems, etc. simply to have fun.

In 2014 after Toronto [7], New York [6], Montreal [5], Island Wood [4], and Boston [3] the Code Sprint stops in Europe for the first time, more precisely in Vienna from March 24th to 28th 2014 [2]. In der Woche vom 24. bis 28. März trafen sich mehr als 60 EntwicklerInnen von über 18 Projekten zu freien und offenen Geographischen Informationssystemen (FOSS GIS) in den von der Stadt Wien (MA 14) zur Verfügung gestellten Räumen zum Vienna Code Sprint 2014 der Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo, www.osgeo.org). Verbesserungen und Weiterentwicklung der einzelnen Anwendungen fanden auf Projektebene statt. Ein besonders wichtiges Kernelement offener und freier Software ist der aktive Austausch und die Zusammenarbeit der verschiedenen Projekte und Initiativen.

Mit 210 Aktualisierungen im Programmcode während des Code Sprints hat das internationale GRASS GIS Development Team (grass.osgeo.org) nach 6-jähriger Entwicklung die neue Version 7 veröffentlicht. Das neue freie Softwarepaket bietet innovative Methoden, um geographische Informationen zu verarbeiten, zu analysieren und zu visualisieren und läuft auf allen wichtigen Betriebssystemen (MS Windows, Apple, Linux, BSD) und Rechnerarchitekturen(x86, amd64, arm) vom Laptop bis zum Großrechner.

Das QGIS-Projekt (www.qgis.org) kümmerte sich um Fehlerbereinigung, diskutierte zukünftige aufzunehmende Funktionen, aktualisierte und vereinfachte die Verwaltung von Programm-Erweiterungen (plugins), die von Benutzern erstellt und der Öffentlichkeit frei zur Verfügung gestellt werden können. Gemeinsam haben beide Projekte die Integration der neuen GRASS GIS-Version 7 in QGIS vorbereitet.

Geographische Informationen sind aus unserem täglichen Leben nicht mehr wegzudenken. So werden zusätzlich zu den Programmen am Computer/Desktop (GRASS GIS und QGIS) Programme im Internet/Webbrowser wie Mapserver (www.mapserver.org), OpenLayers (www.openlayers.org), ZOO-Project (www.zoo-project.org) oder MapMint (www.mapmint.com) immer wichtiger. Um Synergien in Funktionalität und Technologie zu nutzen, haben die Projekte EOxServer (www.eoxserver.org) und Geonode (www.geonode.org) während des Code Sprint eine engere Zusammenarbeit gestartet.

Viele Desktop- und Web-GIS-Programme nutzen ebenfalls freie und offene Anwendungen der Datenumwandlung wie GDAL (www.gdal.org) und Datenspeicherung wie PostGIS (www.postgis.net).

Die internationale Community freier und offener geographischer Informationssysteme ist weltweit vernetzt, innovativ und entwickelt Anwendungen auf höchstem technischem Niveau. Der OSGeo Code Sprint hat aber auch die lokale Vernetzung der Community in Wien und Österreich vertieft.

Get together project members to make decisions and tackle larger geospatial
problems (as done last year at the [[Boston Code Sprint 2013]] and previous
years: [[IslandWood Code Sprint 2012|Island Wood]] (2012),
[[Montreal Code Sprint 2011|Montreal]] (2011),
[[New York Code Sprint 2010|New York City]] (2010), and
[[Toronto Code Sprint 2009|Toronto]] (2009)). This code sprint is targeting
members of the "C Tribe" (e.g., MapServer, QGIS, GRASS, GDAL, Proj, PostGIS,
MapGuide, OpenLayers). Other tribes are welcome to join the sprint, of course,
but we hope that "C Tribe" members will give this event special consideration.

The venue is not far from the center of Vienna (~25min via train and subway) and can be reached easily from the Vienna airport via train.

Convenient route planning for public transportation: http://www.wienerlinien.at/ (both German and English)

From the airport take the train S-Bahn S7 going to Wien Floridsdorf and exit
at Praterstern (~30min). Make sure to avoid the CAT as it doesn't bring you
to Praterstern and I consider it too costly for gaining just 10 minutes.

From Praterstern take the subway U-Bahn U2 going to Seestadt and exit at
Stadlau. Now either take a 15 minutes walk to the venue or take the bus
Autobus 86A going to Breitenleer Straße/Arnikaweg or 87A going to
Hermann-Gebauer-Straße and exit at Genochplatz.

From Praterstern instead of the U2 you can also take the subway U-Bahn U1
particularly when going to the Hotel Hillinger. Take the U1 going to
Leopoldau and exit at Kagran. Now take the tram Straßenbahn 25 going to

=== Guided evening walk - "The City of Vienna at a glance" ===

On Wednesday evening we invite interested participants to a guided evening walk - "The City of Vienna at a glance". An on-site registration will be needed due to a limit number of 25 places.

The downtown tour introduces the imperial city, Vienna´s great history, its unique architecture, and todays life-style.

Meeting in front of St. Stephen´s Cathedral, Vienna’s main 900 years old landmark, we will stroll along Graben and Kohlmarkt, passing former court confectionary Demel and the most exclusive shops in Vienna. Crossing the courtyards of the Imperial Palace "Hofburg" you will hear about the great times of former Austrian monarchy, see where Empress Elizabeth (Sisi) married Emperor Franz Joseph, where the Vienna Boys’ Choir sings mass on Sunday, and where the famous white Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School perform. You will enjoy the great view from Heroes Square to some of the magnificent buildings of the famous Ringstraße. We will continue walking towards State Opera and the legendary hotel Sacher and will end the tour at Albertinaplatz.

== Purpose ==

Get together project members to make decisions and tackle larger geospatial
problems (as done last year at the [[Boston Code Sprint 2013]] and previous
years: [[IslandWood Code Sprint 2012|Island Wood]] (2012),
[[Montreal Code Sprint 2011|Montreal]] (2011),
[[New York Code Sprint 2010|New York City]] (2010), and
[[Toronto Code Sprint 2009|Toronto]] (2009)). This code sprint is targeting
members of the "C Tribe" (e.g., MapServer, QGIS, GRASS, GDAL, Proj, PostGIS,
MapGuide, OpenLayers). Other tribes are welcome to join the sprint, of course,
but we hope that "C Tribe" members will give this event special consideration.

== Venue ==

The City of Vienna MA 14 gladly provides the location for the Vienna Code Sprint for up to 60 sprinters in [http://www.wien.gv.at/stadtplan/grafik.aspx?lang=de-AT&bookmark=zHClRv95TUbsTHFEFcAeRO5RphlRnHnkur2pH4Oprw-b-b&bmadr=25723751 their very new office called STAR 22] (see also [http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=48.22910&mlon=16.45660#map=19/48.22910/16.45660 OSM map]).

The venue is not far from the center of Vienna (~25min via train and subway) and can be reached easily from the Vienna airport via train.

From the airport take the train S-Bahn S7 going to Wien Floridsdorf and exit
at Praterstern (~30min). Make sure to avoid the CAT as it doesn't bring you
to Praterstern and I consider it too costly for gaining just 10 minutes.

From Praterstern take the subway U-Bahn U2 going to Seestadt and exit at
Stadlau. Now either take a 15 minutes walk to the venue or take the bus
Autobus 86A going to Breitenleer Straße/Arnikaweg or 87A going to
Hermann-Gebauer-Straße and exit at Genochplatz.

From Praterstern instead of the U2 you can also take the subway U-Bahn U1
particularly when going to the Hotel Hillinger. Take the U1 going to
Leopoldau and exit at Kagran. Now take the tram Straßenbahn 25 going to
Floridsdorf or the bus Autobus 26A going to Großenzersdorf and exit at
Polgarstraße for the Hotel Hillinger or continue to Konstanziagasse for the
code sprint venue.

On Wednesday evening we invite interested participants to a guided evening walk - "The City of Vienna at a glance". An on-site registration will be needed due to a limit number of 25 places.

The downtown tour introduces the imperial city, Vienna´s great history, its unique architecture, and todays life-style.

Meeting in front of St. Stephen´s Cathedral, Vienna’s main 900 years old landmark, we will stroll along Graben and Kohlmarkt, passing former court confectionary Demel and the most exclusive shops in Vienna. Crossing the courtyards of the Imperial Palace "Hofburg" you will hear about the great times of former Austrian monarchy, see where Empress Elizabeth (Sisi) married Emperor Franz Joseph, where the Vienna Boys’ Choir sings mass on Sunday, and where the famous white Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School perform. You will enjoy the great view from Heroes Square to some of the magnificent buildings of the famous Ringstraße. We will continue walking towards State Opera and the legendary hotel Sacher and will end the tour at Albertinaplatz.
