I also create a ribbon icon with the same color red that I used in the logo.

Enlarged the ribbon icon on the left end, but I kept the width of the ribbon outlining the skyline the same. I used a trapezoid to resize the ribbon width.

The next entry, a sort of variant of the clipper ship, emphasizes navigation and charting a new course for OSG (the slogan can certainly change). The chart created very roughly is based on the official navigation charts on the US govt. web site. Boston is the starting port, making stops along the way, then turning to the open sea. The ship is shown sailing off the map into 'uncharted territory.' There may be too much detail, even after tracing only the essential items.

I can draw clipper ships better than build them out of shapes. But another submission inspired me to reconsider. It was a challenge, but I'm happy enough with it. The clipper was assembled using an image of 'The Lightning,' a clipper ship designed by Donald McKay, who is world known for his clipper ships, and his shipyard was mostly along the inner harbor in East Boston. There is a monument about him on Castle Island. These ships set speed records and, of course, relied on charts and navigation aids (sextant, compasses, for example).

I'll keep going as long as this is open. This entry emphasizes the conference subject - geography. This is a sketch of Boston Common-Boston Public Garden with roads, the subway (black dash), stations (red squares), the State House (red star) and the Freedom Trail (red short dash). Minor cleanup is needed. I also considered wrapping at least the top portion around the circle, but I don't know how to do that.

Second entry I'm squeezing in under the deadline. Since I didn't see any entries with ships, I designed this quick entry based on the Nantucket Lightship - one of which is or has been in the harbor. The ship, with FOSS4G on the side like 'Nantucket' on the side of the real ship (I couldn't find a similar, squarish font, that was close), has the ribbon off the back like a flag. The sign has Boston on it, with the ribbon as decoration. The date appears as a shadow in the water. A lot more could be done with texture to better define the water and dock side. - pdf version

This next entry was done quickly to get in under the deadline. Boston Light stands guard at the entrance to Boston Harbor. The light is on to guarde people to safely navigate through the islands, like FOSS4G does for Open Source Geography. The city skyline is in the background. The ribbon (off color) is in the text. Since it is quickly done - the skyline is not based on any Boston building skyline - so this could be refined in a later iteration. The lighthouse is based on Boston Light (the shape was made in an earlier submission) - I'm sure improvements could be there, as well. - pdf version

This entry emphasizes the geography - through the rose compass - based on the rose compass on Long Wharf and ties in Boston and the merchant trade heritage, and the fact that this is a conference where people from different parts of the world are coming together to this location. Each person - while I can't say are absolutely unique to one another, are different from one another. As they are each from a different compass point, they represent people with unique perspectives and cultures. There are always a few stragglers, however, including at least one marching to his/her own tune. - pdf version.

Variant 2 of previous 'Hub-Wheel' design. This is the Day-Night variant with more details to punch up the fun. There is the sun and moon, clouds, a biplane (partly representing aerial remote sensing and that Boston was an early contributor to aviation), a kite (Boston was also the site for early weather observations of the atmosphere using kites), the International Space Station (there are Boston connections there, too), and a superhero patrolling or perhaps looking for the child floating in the air while holding onto balloons. I'm sure things can be substituted. I wasn't sure how much to put in so I stopped here before it got too crowded. - Same as png - this is in pdf.

In this entry, Boston is represented a composite skyline of known Boston landmarks, including Old North Church, the Prudential Tower, State House dome, Boston Light, Federal Reserve Building, Bunker Hill Bridge, Custom House Tower, MIT dome and Hancock Tower. These are a mixture of ages and uses, which highlights the diversity and richness emboddied in Boston. The ribbons frame the text. Variant - Day/Night. I wasn't getting the right effect in trying to add lighted windows in the buildings - so, I left it as is. - same thing in pdf form

My third entry. The idea is to use the idea of the world-known Boston Marathon as the symbol of Boston, fun (well, maybe for the spectators), a sense of striving and accomplishment. The ribbon serves as the finishing ribbon to declare the winner. Other rinners crossing the line are winners too for just finishing. Images are rough as the human figure is tough to make otu of shapes. I'm sure someone can finish it up.

This is my first entry, showing the Boston Back Bay Skyline from the Cambridge side of the Charles River. The ribbon icon is at the left side and starts the ribbon tracing the skyline. The river is represented in blue. The sailboat makes the river recognizable and provides depth.

There are improvements to make, but this provides the idea.

This is my first entry. There are still some improvements to make, but it provides the idea. This is the Boston Back Bay Skyline as it appears from the Cambridge side of the Charles River Basin. The Charles is represented by the blue band and has a sailboat on it which provides depth. The ribbon logo is on the left and is the starting point where the ribbon traces the skyline.
