== Minutes ==

MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE OPEN SOURCE GEOSPATIAL FOUNDATION A Delaware non-stock corporation.

On May 19, 2006, at 8:00 am Pacific time, pursuant to notice duly given, the Board of Directors (the "Board") of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (the "Foundation" or "OSGeo") held a meeting by teleconference.

Present at the meeting were the following members of the Board: Frank Warmerdam, Mark Lucas, Jo Walsh, Chris Holmes, Arnulf Christl, Venkatesh Raghavan, Dave McIlhagga, and Markus Neteler. Gary Lang did not attend the meeting. Also present at the request of the Board was Daniel Brookshier, VP Website Committee and Ned Horning, member. All participants on the call indicated that they could hear one another. Additionally, Internet Relay Chat was used for backup purposes (#osgeo on irc.freenode.net). Mr. Warmerdam was appointed chairperson of the meeting. Finding a quorum present, Mr. Warmerdam called the meeting to order. Jo Walsh was appointed secretary of the meeting.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

The Board first approved by general consent the minutes of the meeting held on May 5th, 2006.

ROTATING BOARD CHAIR

It was decided that that the board needed a clear chair responsible for scheduling meetings, creating basic agendas. It was decided that the chair role would rotate on a monthly basis with Frank Warmerdam doing it for June, and Mark Lucas for July.

COMMITTEE GUIDELINES

Committee Chair item is postponed because there are some legal issues about what officers can commit the Foundation to doing that are yet to be clarified.

FACE TO FACE MEETING

The need to publicise the face to face meeting was agreed on, and ???? agreed to post to the discuss list.

Availability of travel cost sponsorship by OSGeo for folks travelling to the face to face and similar meetings was discussed. No firm conclusion was arrived at, but for the time being there are not funds available for OSGeo to disperse for such activities. It was agreed that in some circumstances this would be desirable and it ought to be budgeted for.

VISCOM STATUS REPORT

Some discussion of VISCOM activities and Arnulf agreed to translate a german summary page about LinuxTag for the board.

OSGEO JAPAN AND LOCAL CHAPTERS

Reviewed Venkatesh's briefing (by email) on OSGeo Japan Branch.

Some discussion of what a local chapter should do (translation, maintain local language mailing lists),
might do, and shouldn't do (make commitments on behalf of all of OSGeo).

Frank, Arnulf and Venkatesh take an action item to prepare a more detailed proposal for local chapter guidelines.

Daniel and WebCom will work with OSGeo Japan Branch on how to maintain a translated subdomain on the
CollabNet machines.

Venkatesh raised issue about Asian region geospatial shows that OSGeo ought to be represented at, but this issue was determined to be in VISCOMs area of responsibility.

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

Frank Warmerdam reports that the Fundraising Committee is holding off on developing a fundraising program until the board prepares a budget providing them with an objective, and an indication to sponsors what the money will be spent on.

BUDGET

It was agreed that the board needs to develop a one year budget.

Frank takes the action to prepare a Budget wiki page to get discussions going, with the intent of bringing the budget into good shape at the Face to Face for final board approval. In the meantime everyone should contribute to the budget page with ideas. We also need to determine costs for things like a CollabNet support contract.

LDCM PROPOSAL

Ned Horning and Mark Lucas talk about the LDCM proposal Ned has prepared. Mark makes a motion for OSGeo to provide a statement of support for the LDCM proposal with the caveat that the final version of the proposal be distributed to the board and that if any board members raise a concern within one week (before final submission) then the OSGeo support would be withheld. Chris seconded, and the motion is carried.

After three successful years, we'll continue the OSGeo "hacking" event in Bolsena in an [http://www.conventobolsena.org/ Italian monastery] ([http://tinyurl.com/2t6zby see map location], and videos: [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wrZrK64UIw 2008-video], [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mxox3AsjH6Q 2009-video] and [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Vjx06Rlols 2010-video]. The monastery is overlooking Lago Bolsena and offers space to about 25 people in small bedrooms :-) . It is one of the coolest places for such an event. Quiet, isolated, simple and serene. There's a good wireless and wired internet connection, further improved this year. It should be perfect for SVN, IRC and mail. Have a look yourself, including looking at the photo gallery.
For what the food concerns, we will have a cook who will take care of us :-) . There's a large dining space, but we will eat outside overlooking the lake if weather permits (very likely in June).

The all inclusive cost will be 500 Euro (Excl VAT) per person for the full week. You can stay all seven days and food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) is included in the price. As in previous years, we will go out for a city visit and a dinner on one of the evenings (also included).

The event will take place during the whole week (7 days), although the emphasis will probably be Monday to Friday for most participants.

The closest airports are the Roma airports (Ciampino and Fiumincino).

From Rome to the monastery there is 135 km aproximately.

There is no railway to Bolsena.

From Fiumicino to Rome you can take the train [http://www.adr.it/content.asp?Subc=1363&L=1&idMen=731 METROPOLITANO FR1].

From Rome you can take a bus (cotral http://www.cotralspa.it/ENG/capolinea.asp) to Viterbo and other bus from viterbo to Bolsena (9am & 7.30pm).

Alternatively you can take a train from Rome to Orvieto and take a taxi from Orvieto to Bolsena. Orvieto Taxi info:

== Basic Premise ==

Following up on [[Benchmarking 2010|last year's exercise]], the performance shoot-out presentation at [[FOSS4G2011]] will test how long each Web mapping server takes to generate a map image, from a common set of spatial data, on a common platform. The data will be served by each Web mapping server through the WMS standard, which will serve exactly the same set of LAYERS. A JMeter load will be run on the testing box to measure various aspects of those layers.

== Rules of Engagement (DRAFT) ==

There was a lot of discussion at LCA2007 about the roles and functions that an Australian OSGeo chapter might provide. I will eventually try integrate them into the thoughts listed above:

** Including broader contacts such as ASK-OSS, AGIMO, OSDM and others
* Strategy - OSGeo Au might formulate a strategy to progress the adoption of FOSS geospatial solutions (aka notes further up this page)

= About =

[http://live.osgeo.org OSGeo Live] provides [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_CD bootable ISO-Images] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine Virtual Machines] which allow users to try out fully-operational versions of popular Free Geospatial Software without the need to install a thing. Everything is set up for you ready to go: just reboot into it, glance at the help pages on the desktop, and go. The existing hard drive and operating system will not be modified in any way, everything happens in temporary system memory. As such it will run a bit slower than the "real thing" and you may want to grab a USB flash drive to save or transfer files with. You can load and boot a live-image completely from a USB stick too if you prefer.

We do this in large part by maintaining automated build scripts which collect many [[OSGeo]] programs and sample data-sets together, and then combine them to form the Live disc or VM itself. By tweaking these scripts users are free to make their own custom distributions, for example localized in their own language and with local map data.

There are multiple use cases for this product:

* '''Demo DVD''' that can be handed out at conferences. This will contain a wide variety of applications, preconfigured with some sample data and containing introductory tutorials. It should be able to function completely offline, at least within the scope of the tutorials, and should provide an introduction to many products. This is very much a Live DVD, and as such should be conservative with regards to size (it will be run from RAM).
* '''Education DVD''' This seems to be a more involved version than the Demo DVD, including more involved material, including train-the-trainer style material. This is targeted at those who will be teaching others, be it in workshops or university classes/labs. My expectation (mleslie: feel free to correct me) is that this is more likely to be installed on machines and used as a teaching resource, as opposed to a toy to play with, as with the Demo DVD. This will require material developed through the [[Category:Education|Education initiative]].
* '''Workstation Install DVD''' This need was seen in Cape Town, where the bandwidth seems to be a very limiting factor. Using the DVD to install either a complete OS, a set of packages to an existing Linux, or Windows installers completely offline is of great value in the developing world. Would it be of greater value to lose the Edu or demo material and put in complete application documentation?
