The idea is to define a layer model suitable to be exported to Epanet's .inp file, and a geoprocess to export this model to Epanet. So, we will need to define pipes, wells, valves, depots and so on in gvSIG, analize connectivity and then export to Epanet. From Epanet, to analyze and modify the network and then export the network again to gvSIG. gvsig-gpe is a library for reading and writing data based on the GML format, through the use of events. It does not depend on any geometry data model, providing the raw data to the application. Initially developed for the GML format, it supports readers and writers for KML 2.1 formats. The project consist on develop a new plugin org.gvsig.gpe.kml2 for gvsig-gpe or complete the existing one adding the new KML 2.2 specification. The event's handled by the API also can be extended to support the Google KML file symbology referenced.

SQlite3 [http://www.sqlite.org] is a cross-plattform, fast and simple file-based DBMS. Currently, gvSIG has nothing to offer for those users that want to have a fully functional and fast desktop DBMS backend, without having to install (and manage) a full client/server system. SQlite3 could ideally fill that gap, being a far superior alternative to DBF and ODBC. SQlite3 can also store geometries (WKB and WKT) in an OGC-conformant manner. The GDAL/OGR driver page for SQLite3 details how this should be done. In addition, the SpatiaLite [http://www.gaia-gis.it/spatialite/] project provides optimized geometry storage plus topological SQL query functions. This looks very much like the emerging open source standard to replace those awful Shapefiles. Quantum GIS and OpenJUMP already have direct support for it and this makes having it in gvSIG all the more important. Much code could be borrowed from OpenJUMP, which is also Java based and already has working SQlite/SpatiaLite support. This should be implemented for gvSIG 2.0, as the data storage model has changed fundamentally in this code branch.

The idea is to give support any OSM formats on gvSIG:

#. official API (actually on version [http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/API_v0.6 0.6]). It's the official API to access to the vector information of the project in XML format. For this reason, it's not valid for great data volume. JOSM restricts the big downloads. Therefore it's the official format and the most widely used.
#. [http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Binary_Format OSM Binary Format]. It's the API binary version. Being binary, it's perfect for optimizing the access to great data volume.
#. [http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Mobile_Binary_Protocol OSM Mobile Binary Protocol]. The equivalent of the previous one, but optimized for mobile devices. In this case, it would be interesting to add this format support to gvSIG Mobile.

Accessing remote tiled map services allows the user to get updated maps from any part of the world inmediately. You can use those maps to locate yourself on an unknown city or to validate the features you are digitizing.

The project should include:

* Cache of tiles
* Drawing tiles as they come instead of drawing the map when all tiles are downloaded
* Download of tiles while the user is panning (dragging) the map instead of downloading when the user releases
* Concretize zoom levels of the application when a tiled layer is used

[http://www.gvsigmini.com gvSIG Mini] is a free mobile map viewer of several layers sources (OSM, WMS, WMS-c) which at the moment is able to consume [http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/YOURS YOURS routing service] and [http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Name_finder NameFinder service] (also weather, twitter services, etc.).

gvSIG Mini is currently being developed by [http://www.prodevelop.es Prodevelop]. There are two versions: for Android and J2ME (CLDC/MIDP 2.0). Students are free to select which version of gvSIG Mini want to develop for or use a subset of the Java API compatible between Android and J2ME to build a library and then make the connectors needed for both versions.

== OSGeo Hacking event in a monastry near Bolsena (Spring 2008) ==

[[User:ticheler | I, Jeroen]], have been thinking of getting an OSGeo "hacking" or code sprint event setup in an [http://www.conventobolsena.org/ Italian monastry] ([http://tinyurl.com/2t6zby here]). Friends of mine take care of the place which is overlooking Lago Bolsena and offers space to 25 people in small bedrooms :-) . Its probably one of the coolest places for such an event. Quiet, isolated and serene. There's a good wireless and wired internet connection, although I wouldn't bet my hand on it if we all start to download satellite images. It should be perfect for SVN, IRC and mail.

The cost would be about 200 Euro per person for the week (food not included, we can organize that separately). There's a large kitchen and large dining space. Obviously since the weather most likely permits, we would eat outside overlooking the lake. Have a look yourself, including looking at the photo gallery.

If you are interested, please sign up below? Looking at availability of the place, best would be June or possibly in May (not always available!).

If there's enough interest I can make a booking. There would be 7 days time, so it can also be divided into smaller time chunks that are occupied by different projects.

Open Source software has come to be a proven environment for building stronger software through open global collaboration. The Open Source Geospatial Foundation, hereafter referred to as OSGeo, has been created to support and build the highest-quality geospatial software.

The OSGeo's goal is to promote the use OSGeo projects globally by fostering strong localized OSGeo partnership and presence in different geographic and linguistic domains. Apart from being a strong local voice for the OSGeo, some of the major tasks whereby localized OSGeo partnership and presence could enrich and enhance global geospatial initiatives would be;

* Provide member networking opportunities for support and job opportunities
* Software Internationalization and Localization
* Development of prototype applications to demonstrate Open Source geospatial capabilities to local and regional audiences
* Software Packaging and Customization for local and regional needs
* Training, Support and Development of e-Learning Contents in local languages
* Support Open standards and Open access to geospatial data in region
* Promoting OSGeo and enhancing visibility in various forums

The above activities would complement and strengthen the efforts of OSGeo in increasing awareness about available Open Source Geospatial solutions and stimulating adoption in education, industry, government and non-profit organizations in various geographic and linguistic domains.

== Chapter Responsibilities ==

OSGeo does not differentiate between a geographic or linguistic grouping and strongly encourages self-organization similar to "User Groups" or "Special Interest Groups" in other
Open Source Projects. "User Groups" or "Special Interest Groups" do not formally represent OSGeo but can avail some of the services such as the use of OSGeo Wiki. "OSGeo Chapter" offer
a more formal framework for self-organization based on a few simple guidelines listed below;

* “OSGeo Chapter” officially represents OSGeo and is formally recognized as OSGeo Project.
* “OSGeo Chapter” must support the OSGeo Mission and Objectives of OSGeo.
* “OSGeo Chapter” must hold regular meetings (at least annual) and provide annual report of activities to chapter membership and OSGeo Board.
* “OSGeo Chapter” will not entail any financial commitment from or on-behalf of OSGeo. OSGeo will also not provide any budget assistance to the “OSGeo Chapter”.
* “OSGeo Chapter” is encouraged develop and maintain “Directory Listing” of companies, people, universities and organizations involved with or using OSGeo projects.
* “OSGeo Chapter” must strive at networking with organizations to enlist participation and support for OSGeo.
* OSGeo reserves the right to terminate its relation with an “OSGeo Chapter” if OSGeo has reasons to believe that the activities of the “OSGeo Chapter” are contrary or detrimental to the Mission and Objectives of OSGeo.

== Chapter Benefits ==

* “OSGeo Chapter” is permitted to use OSGeo Logo and other branded resources for promoting the Mission and Objectives of OSGeo.
* OSGeo will provide necessary infrastructure to promote communication and visibility of “OSGeo Chapter”. The infrastructure will include mailing list, hosting of wiki pages, domain service for “OSGeo Chapter”.

== Chapter Formation ==

In order to form a chapter, the following steps should be taken:
# "OSGeo Chapter" should self-organize (for instance in the OSGeo wiki, via OSGeo mailing list, etc), seeking to determine if a critical mass of interest exists to justify a chapter.TODO

Esto significa un comienzo muy bueno para juntar esfuerzos y crear una cumunidad muy amplia adentro de OSGeo.

Two different meetings have manifested the intention to create a Spanish language OSGeo local chapter.

== Chapter Roles ==

Open Source software has come to be a proven environment for building stronger software through open global collaboration. The Open Source Geospatial Foundation, hereafter referred to as OSGeo, has been created to support and build the highest-quality geospatial software.

The OSGeo's goal is to promote the use OSGeo projects globally by fostering strong localized OSGeo partnership and presence in different geographic and linguistic domains. Apart from being a strong local voice for the OSGeo, some of the major tasks whereby localized OSGeo partnership and presence could enrich and enhance global geospatial initiatives would be;

* Provide member networking opportunities for support and job opportunities
* Software Internationalization and Localization
* Development of prototype applications to demonstrate Open Source geospatial capabilities to local and regional audiences
* Software Packaging and Customization for local and regional needs
* Training, Support and Development of e-Learning Contents in local languages
* Support Open standards and Open access to geospatial data in region
* Promoting OSGeo and enhancing visibility in various forums

The above activities would complement and strengthen the efforts of OSGeo in increasing awareness about available Open Source Geospatial solutions and stimulating adoption in education, industry, government and non-profit organizations in various geographic and linguistic domains.

== Chapter Responsibilities ==

OSGeo does not differentiate between a geographic or linguistic grouping and strongly encourages self-organization similar to "User Groups" or "Special Interest Groups" in other
Open Source Projects. "User Groups" or "Special Interest Groups" do not formally represent OSGeo but can avail some of the services such as the use of OSGeo Wiki. "OSGeo Chapter" offer
a more formal framework for self-organization based on a few simple guidelines listed below;

* “OSGeo Chapter” officially represents OSGeo and is formally recognized as OSGeo Project.
* “OSGeo Chapter” must support the OSGeo Mission and Objectives of OSGeo.
* “OSGeo Chapter” must hold regular meetings (at least annual) and provide annual report of activities to chapter membership and OSGeo Board.
* “OSGeo Chapter” will not entail any financial commitment from or on-behalf of OSGeo. OSGeo will also not provide any budget assistance to the “OSGeo Chapter”.
* “OSGeo Chapter” is encouraged develop and maintain “Directory Listing” of companies, people, universities and organizations involved with or using OSGeo projects.
* “OSGeo Chapter” must strive at networking with organizations to enlist participation and support for OSGeo.
* OSGeo reserves the right to terminate its relation with an “OSGeo Chapter” if OSGeo has reasons to believe that the activities of the “OSGeo Chapter” are contrary or detrimental to the Mission and Objectives of OSGeo.

== Chapter Benefits ==

* “OSGeo Chapter” is permitted to use OSGeo Logo and other branded resources for promoting the Mission and Objectives of OSGeo.
* OSGeo will provide necessary infrastructure to promote communication and visibility of “OSGeo Chapter”. The infrastructure will include mailing list, hosting of wiki pages, domain service for “OSGeo Chapter”.
