The wiki document talks about a requirement of lab annual report, but we have decided against requiring a report, we will require just an annual confirmation of membership in the table.

A “Lab” can be in any organizational type (educational institutions, firms, nonprofits, government agencies) as long as they fulfill the criteria above. This was unanimous in our meeting.
A “Partners” -- a new GeoForAll entity.
A new table was set up for "Partners" in http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Edu_current_initiatives#sortable_table_id_0
We already have two listed… and we want more!

‘Schools’ as labs - decided to discuss that on Friday’s BOF.

The information is currently scattered between several wiki documents, the criteria for maintaining the membership should be added to how to join geo4all website.

Phil Davis gave a short presentation entitled: Certifications - What, Why, Who

- Made the point that there are different levels of certification
- Industry or ‘field’ level (e.g., Certified Photogrammetric Specialist)
- Open source (such as the effort made to do this by Metaspatial)
- Technology-specific (e.g., QGIS certification)

Tanzeel Rehman Khan gave a presentation on this MS thesis entitled: An Open Source Certification Model’
- He was going to update the powerpoint and then was willing to share it with anyone who wants to see it.

The group discussed this issue for a long time. Some of the points made included:

(1) The challenge to actually come up with a certification;
(2) Some wondered about whether certification was actually needed (who wants it) and the response was that some employers would appreciate it.
(3) Question about the cost of certification and that if this did move forward it would need to be kept low cost, especially for people in developing countries.
(4) Some in the group felt that if we move toward certifications it should be at the technology-level (e.g., QGIS, gvSig, etc.) and that it should be the responsibility of the software projects to come up with their certification.
(5) Some still may not have agreed with the idea of technology.based certifications and that there is a need for a higher level curriculuar certification (not technology specific). More discussion needed - new BOF in afternoon on Thursday? Franz?;
(6) Some felt that this issue needs to be championed by OSGeo, and there is the issue of how to pay for the staffing needed to lead the charge.

''Action items'': I think Franz was organizing another BOF for lunch on Thursday to discuss this more and maybe come up with some tangible action items.

'''TOPIC 3: OSGeo Education and Curriculum Committee and GeoForAll: Question of separate or the same?'''

The history is that the participants in the OSGeo Education committee really moved to communicating through the GeoForAll group once that was established.
Unanimous in the room that the two are really the same thing, and that the OSGeo education and curriculum committee page should now point to the GeoForAll pages.
Charlie (as OSGeo Education chair) completely re-wrote the OSGeo Education page yesterday:

In September 2011, the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) and the International Cartographic Association (ICA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the aim of developing on a global basis collaboration opportunities for academia, industry and government organizations in open source GIS software and data. The MoU aims to provide expertise and support for the establishment of Open Source Geospatial Laboratories across the world for supporting development of open-source geospatial software, open data, open standards training and expertise. ISPRS joined this initiative in 2014. The motto of ICA-OSGeo Lab initiative is "Geo For All".Central to "Geo for All" mission is the belief that knowledge is a public good and Open Principles in Education will provide great opportunities for everyone. All interested organisations must be committed to contribute to the vision outlined in the ICA-OSGeo MoU http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/MOU_ICA to develop collaboration opportunities for academia, industry and government organisations in free and open source GIS software , FOSS, open data , open access (publications) and contribute to open education in the future. (A) Your local organisation MUST BE COMMITTED TO CONTRIBUTE to the vision outlined in the ICA-OSGeo MoU [1]http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/MOU_ICA to develop collaboration opportunities for academia, industry and government organisations in free and open source GIS software , FOSS, open data , open access (publications) and contribute to open education in the future. All participants should contribute to Education, Research and Service for the benefit and betterment of humanity as the key guiding principle and work towards the vision of the UN Millennium Development Goals [2] http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/ for building a better world.

(B) At least one person at your institution or organization should have strong knowledge in geospatial information science and vision to lead this activity and to build a team of people, locally. This person should act as a liaison officer to the initiative.

(C) There should be a website established for your Open Source Geospatial Laboratory listing current research, people, and training information. This web presence will allow other nodes in the network and the general public to understand and promote your local efforts around research and teaching of open source geospatial technologies and approaches. The website should be established within a year of the lab announcement and has to be maintained at least annually.

(D) GEO4ALL MAKES A COMMITMENT TO promote the initiative widely through OSGeo, ICA and ISPRS channels to help build up collaboration opportunities for the future. We will also do a joint press release to announce the initiative and start building collaborations. A primary collaborative initiative continues to be the creation and maintenance of shared open access educational resources and/or active participation in the open source software and data development. We will also add the information of all labs in the Open Geospatial Lab network node site within OSGeo website so that all participating labs urls are added and linked.

Open Education is the simple and powerful idea that the world’s knowledge is a public good and that technology in general and the Worldwide Web in particular provide an extraordinary opportunity for everyone to share, use, and reuse knowledge. Open educational resources (OERs) are free and openly licensed educational materials that can be used for teaching and learning. Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge.
We especially welcome applications from universities, educational institutes, government organisations in developing countries to help develop capacity building in geospatial education by establishing Open Source Geo Labs and support Open Education initiatives worldwide.

On the wall outside the building is a sign that says 'Politecnico Di Milano' and 14 is written above the doorway. Go through the door and there is a small security room. There will be signs saying 'GeoForAll' posted somewhere near this station. The meeting room is in the upstairs. I (Charlie) will be there at 8am getting set up. Give yourself time to find this building (there are nice cafes all along the roads leading to it so you can pick up your morning coffee! We will start right at 8:30 am!

Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions are unstructured timeslots where people can self-organise themselves to discuss topics of interest.

When: Tuesday July 14th, 8:30-11:30 am

** Who is doing what (responsibilities)?
** Can we build a network of teachers and schools? And how to start?
** Can we ask the teachers/students of the network via a questionnaire?
** What can we do to make our tools better and useful to every teacher and child? (i.e. translation, new tools, new ideas, applications based on the age, etc)
* 30 minutes on people reporting on their next steps and planning for Seoul -- who is going? Organizing there?
