Introduction
Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions are unstructured timeslots where people can self-organise themselves to discuss topics of interest.

<br/>
BoF's at the Oregon Convention Center
General Information
During the FOSS4G2014 conference in Portland, USA, there will be a number of spaces for people to hold Birds of a Feather sessions.

<br/>
The 1-hour time blocks outlined below are just general guidelines. Adjust as needed. For reference, an overview of the FOSS4G schedule is available at https://2014.foss4g.org/about/calendar/.

<br/>
Rooms
We have three rooms each day at the Convention Center: E146, E147, & E148. These rooms are dedicated spaces so BoF to your heart's content! Default room configuration will be long tables arranged a U-shape (although "contents may settle while BoF'ing"). The room capacities stated below are based off of that U configuration. We'll try to have some additional chairs available as well.

<br/>
Technically the Exhibit Hall has room too. It will be arranged ballroom style with round tables. However, keep in mind it is a large, open, and public space. As such, it can't really be reserved, and is probably not ideal for a formal meeting (i.e. it could be noisy). In a nut shell, use at your own risk.

Capacities
* Room E146: 36
* Room E147: 18
* Room E148: 20
Some coordination between FOSS4G and FOSS4G-Europe would be helpful in case that FOSS4G comes comes to Europe (as currently planned) in 2016. Feel free to ping us later on...

Introduction
During the FOSS4G2009 conference in Sydney, Australia, there will be conference rooms available for people to hold Birds-of-a-Feather sessions.

Birds-Of-A-Feather sessions are unstructured timeslots where people can self organise themselves to discuss topics of interest.

This year, Birds of a Feather sessions will be held on Thursday 22nd October.

A number of rooms are available. First ones in get the rooms.

Organising Contact
* Bruce Bannerman, Tyler Mitchell

Timeslots Available
At this stage, each room is scheduled for one hour between 1615 to 1715.

The rooms will be available for longer, however remember that the FOSS4G Harbour Cruise Dinner starts at 1900.

If we get a lot of demand, we may need to reduce the time that each room is available for.
This will allow us to share the resources between more people.

Rooms Available
* Parkside G01, capacity 70 people
* Parkside G02, capacity 70 people
* Parkside G03, capacity 80 people
* Parkside G04, capacity 170 people
* Parkside G05, capacity 50 people

Please note:

We are currently looking at additional options for places to run the BOF sessions in.

Rooms will be allocated to BOF sessions closer to the event.
You can use this page to organize your BOF session:
* create a section below for your BOF
* have people edit this page to indicate they will be attending
* if you need a bigger room than that which has been assigned to you, let Tyler or Bruce know
* you must provide a contact person who is managing the meeting
* also make your description as clear as possible, for many attendees it will be the only thing they read before choosing one

BOF sessions
FOSS4G in Government
To start the ball rolling, seeing that everyone else is sitting back
and waiting for everyone else: some potential discussion points:

* The UK Government's policy on Open Source It would be good to get a UK person to talk to this.
* How can governments exploit open source spatial:
* Implement based on Open Standards.
* The GeoNetwork example where we all need a Metadata entry tool and catalogue.
** We all don't want to pay for the same development, but share / pool resources.
** how do we coordinate this work, while working sensitively with Open Source communities who own the code base and may not want to go in the same direction that we do. This includes issues relating to working with Project Steering Committees etc.
** We can't expect communities to do our work for free. Therefore we will need to either engage our own people or consultancies to do the work. The consultancies could come from within the community from anywhere around the world, until we build up our own local communities. This could create procurement problems.
* The need for governments to engage with Open Source communities at all levels, not just as developers.
* The need to allow employees to participate within OS Communities as part of their day to day jobs: i.e. we need to build up our technical skills.
* The need to treat OS on a level playing field with proprietary solutions. That will mean looking at the Solution life cycle (See the new UK OS policy).
* Experiences in other countries:
** What is working.
** What is not working.
* Given national and international experiences of all, what models will work for Governments to break down the perceived barriers and myths associated with FOSS
* A plan worth considering / discussion is a proposal by the South Australian Government to implement an Australian Open Technology Foundationwhich is currently before Australian Governments, selected ICT / Open Technology Vendors and Academia for in principle support.
** Would a foundation acting as the 'common glue' assist in these endeavours
** focus on openness to improve interoperability, independence, resilience and flexibility in ICT operations
** Authorative registry of open technologies in use in Governments around Australia with appropriate learnings and contacts
** Facilitate sharing of resources, technologies and knowledge
** Link with existing programs underway nationally and internationally to share information to all
** Link with international Open Technology Groups
INSPIRE Data Profile Support in FOSS4G
We want to discuss an approach towards the upcoming INSPIRE data specifications and how to best support them in our open source software. It is important for the FOSS community to come up with a story that is more than just "Yes that is possible but contract us first".
This BOF is to seek feedback from those of you that see the same need and to investigate if some work has already been done, seek input in how we would best approach this, if there are options for a Europe wide collaboration on this etcetera.

Questions and/or points of discussions are:
* Considering that clients would like to see a product that does some of the INSPIRE data conversions out of the box, how do you approach this when usually we only implement things after they have been contracted? (in contrast to proprietary software where often an investment is made that is earned back through licensing schemes)
* Have any application schema's already been implemented in some form by you in GEOFOSS?
* What tools have you used or do you want to use (e.g. ogr, Talend, deegree, GeoServer)
* How would we go about joined development, or maybe even joined investment etcetera?

Based in Switzerland and France, Camptocamp is an active editor and integrator of Open Source software specializing in Geospatial solutions, Business solutions and Infrastructure solutions. Our company offers a complete software service package including R&D, consulting, customized project development, training (certified training institution) and support. Our team consists of highly qualified and quality-driven professionals, who inspire, master and challenge Open Source solutions.

The involvement of Camptocamp and its employees in the development of Open Source projects is a constant commitment. As a company, we strive to make a difference by contributing to Open Source key communities and our engineers are committers and/or members of several projects committees (GeoExt, GeoNetwork, PostGIS, MapFish, MapServer, OpenLayers, Spatial Data Integrator, and Udig, to name a few).

Key Accomplishments
Throughout 2008, Camptocamp was pleased to witness the growing interest in MapFish by the community of users and developers. Subsequently, the MapFish community applied for the OSGeo incubation in September 2008. In collaboration with OpenGeo, Camptocamp also initiated the GeoExt project in order to offer a standardized library for ExtJs-based GeoWidget. This project has experienced swift success and is garnering great interest within the geospatial community.

Several large customer projects started -or were completed- by our teams in 2008, providing the opportunity to improve and extend several pieces of software, undeniably bringing significant contributions to Open Source software such as GeoNetwork. The most relevant projects were: 1) GeoCat.ch II: the development of the next generation geospatial catalog on behalf of the Swiss government, in collaboration with Geocat B.V and the BRGM, 2) GeoNetwork: used for the GeoSource project, a metadata catalog for local government agencies, built in collaboration with the BRGM.

Another important accomplishment for Camptocamp in 2008 was the development of a customized spatial data infrastructure solution on behalf of the UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency), using several Open Source components (Spatial Data Integrator, MapFish/OpenLayers, GeoNetwork) and enabling the integrated management of geographical information for camp mapping and UNHCR data.

Seminars, workshops, training sessions and demo events to promote the use of Open Source geoinformatics in GIS projects are regularly organized in France and Switzerland by our team of experts. Camptocamp is proud to support collaborative developments of open geospatial technologies and to be an active player in the promotion of OSGeo and FOSS in Europe. With OSGeo Francophone chapter, we organized the Open Source Village at the Geo Evènement conference in Paris, France. Our company is also a loyal participant to several national and international conferences as an exhibitor and/or a speaker.

Camptocamp believes that the synergies and joint efforts within the OSGeo to built community-led projects are great opportunities to show that high-quality Open Source GIS tools can be developed by all and be available to all.

Participants
(interested package maintainers please add your name below!)

* a Cygwin Setup derived network installer has been selected for use, though it will be modified for a simplified expressed install: (working prototype) The installer lives at http://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/osgeo4w/setup and is mostly maintained by Frank and Assefa.
* A preliminary pass has been made on a variety of OSGeo4W Packages. Some will need revision and many more will need to be added based on OSGeo4W Packaging.

Plans
* Hoping to have a reasonable stable "OSGeo4W 2008" ready for wide use by May 2008.
* select a Project Steering Committee
* longer term: enter incubation as an OSGeo project

Build Environment
Each package is built individually on the packager's machine, and then uploaded. There is no need for complete consistency in development environments. So packages might be built with MSVC 6, 7.1, 8, 9, MSYS/MingW and possibly even other compilers. Mixing compilers may be problematic for C++ interfaces, but is generally fine for C interfaces.

Packages used as libraries by other packages should have include files, and stub libraries in the package so the OSGeo4W tree can be used as a "buildkit" for additional packages.

Versions
* must pick our supported version of Java, perl, PHP, Python, etc. to use throughout installer buildkit
