= OpenRouter 2010 SOC Ideas =

Enter ideas for development projects here. Note these are just suggestions - students are welcome to propose projects based on their own interests that relate to OpenRouter. Our current efforts are based on the following projects:
* [http://pgrouting.postlbs.org/ pgRouting]. This routing library provides routing functionality to PostGIS/PostgreSQL.
* [http://opengraphrouter.sourceforge.net/ OpenGraphRouter]. This project is a C++ library and tools to build a commercial grade routing engine.

You can find the source code, tutorials, the project mailing list and various other information at the links above.

To give you an idea about possible SoC projects, here are some suggestions:

== pgRouting related ideas ==

=== Implement a bi-directional shortest path algorithm ===

So far pgRouting doesn't provide a bi-directional shortest path search implementation.

=== Add support for time constraints ===

Real-time shortest path searches are not implemented yet in pgRouting. What if network conditions change during a trip? An example could be train or bus schedules or time restrictions in road networks. Currently pgRouting algorithms don't take into account these changes.

=== Network layering support ===

This idea is a quite a challenging task. Network layering would allow the routing algorithm to change from more to less dense networks to enable long-distance routing.

=== Add Highway Hierarchies routing support ===

Add support for routing based on Highway Hierarchies based on algorithms developed by P. Sanders and D. Schultes.

=== K-Shortest Path support ===

Add support for K-Shortest Path search. That is, not only the shortest path is to be determined, but also the second shortest, the third shortes, and so up to the K-th shortest path.

We currently store the graph in our own set of files that facilitate quick access. We would like to have the option of storing the data in a database. Graph structures are not inherently relation so it is like that data will need to be stored in blobs of some type, but that is open to discussion. The goal of this task would be to design an appropriate structure, and write the C++ classes that would manage moving data in and out of these structures and updating them if needed.

*In the ~/.gpsdrive/tracks/ directory you will find australia.gpx which is a track line following the coastline.
*Options -> Import -> GPX track
*Hidden folders are hidden in the file picker, but just start typing ~/.gpsdrive and hit enter. You should then see the tracks/ directory and be able to load australia.gpx.
*A red trace should appear along the coastline.
*Check that it lines up well with the coast as shown in map tiles of varying scale.

==== If a GPS is plugged in ====

*Make sure gpsd is running by starting "xgps" from the command line.
*The program will automatically detect gpsd and jump to your current position. This should bring up a continental map as you won't have any map tiles downloaded for your area yet.
*See the above "Downloading Maps" section to get some local tiles.
*If you have a local GPX track of some roads try loading that and making sure everything lines up, as detailed in the above "Overlay a GPX track" section.

:Verify a new window opens up (size: 800 x 600 pixels approx.). From now on, buttons on the left side will be called (from top): button 1, button 2, button 3, button 4, button 5 and button 6. Button 1 is a cycle button with four different states corresponding to four different tools, so that active tool is the visible one.

*Click button 5 and choose EPSG:25833 in the top combo box.
*Click button 3, choose "Rome (Italy) Aerial" in the bottom combo box and click on the button located to the right of the combo box (with a little triangle).

*Click button 3 and check the check box tagged as "Waypts".

= Introduction =
During the [http://2009.foss4g.org/ FOSS4G2009 conference] in Sydney, Australia, there will be conference rooms available for people to hold Birds-of-a-Feather sessions.

Birds-Of-A-Feather sessions are unstructured timeslots where people can self organise themselves to discuss topics of interest.

This year, Birds of a Feather sessions will be held on Thursday 22nd October.

A number of rooms are available. First ones in get the rooms.

At this stage, each room is scheduled for one hour between 1615 to 1715.

The rooms will be available for longer, however remember that the FOSS4G Harbour Cruise Dinner starts at 1900.

If we get a lot of demand, we may need to reduce the time that each room is available for.
This will allow us to share the resources between more people.

To start the ball rolling, seeing that everyone else is sitting back
and waiting for everyone else: some potential discussion points:

* Implement based on Open Standards.

The consultancies could come from within the community from anywhere around the world, until we build up our own local communities. This could create procurement problems.
* The need for governments to engage with Open Source communities at all levels, not just as developers.
* The need to allow employees to participate within OS Communities as part of their day to day jobs: i.e. we need to build up our technical skills.
* The need to treat OS on a level playing field with proprietary solutions. That will mean looking at the Solution life cycle (See the new UK OS policy).

For those not familiar with the concept, routing provides the path between two locations. Often there can be criteria considered such as time, cost, and so forth.

===Project Purpose===

The intention of this project is to work towards creation of open source software providing routing capability.

===Design goals===

Desired attributes:
* Library Coded in C (or C wrapper to C++)
* Architected and designed for performance
* Abstracted storage to allow for use of data from various sources e.g. shapefiles, RDBMS, others
