* Back to the main OSGeo Google Summer of Code 2010 Ideas wiki page.

OpenRouter 2010 SOC Ideas
Enter ideas for development projects here. Note these are just suggestions - students are welcome to propose projects based on their own interests that relate to OpenRouter. Our current efforts are based on the following projects:
* pgRouting. This routing library provides routing functionality to PostGIS/PostgreSQL.
* OpenGraphRouter. This project is a C++ library and tools to build a commercial grade routing engine.

You can find the source code, tutorials, the project mailing list and various other information at the links above.

To give you an idea about possible SoC projects, here are some suggestions:

pgRouting related ideas
Implement a bi-directional shortest path algorithm
So far pgRouting doesn't provide a bi-directional shortest path search implementation.

Add support for time constraints
Real-time shortest path searches are not implemented yet in pgRouting. What if network conditions change during a trip? An example could be train or bus schedules or time restrictions in road networks. Currently pgRouting algorithms don't take into account these changes.

Network layering support
This idea is a quite a challenging task. Network layering would allow the routing algorithm to change from more to less dense networks to enable long-distance routing.

Add Highway Hierarchies routing support
Add support for routing based on Highway Hierarchies based on algorithms developed by P. Sanders and D. Schultes.

K-Shortest Path support
Add support for K-Shortest Path search. That is, not only the shortest path is to be determined, but also the second shortest, the third shortes, and so up to the K-th shortest path.

Better support for turn restrictions
[...]

OpenGraphRouter related ideas
Continue work on this new general purpose OpenSource Routing library that is designed to be modular and reusable and could be used with or without a database.

Improve existing Driving Directions Module
Improve the existing driving direction support and add support for richer information available through the Navteq data model.

Add Turn restriction support based on Navteq data model
Add support for turn restrictions based on the Navteq data model.

Add support for TeleAtlas data
Add support for TeleAtlas data. This would include writing a data loader, adding support to the driving directions module and anything else related to supporting TeleAtlas data.

Add Highway Hierarchies routing support
Add support for routing based on Highway Hierarchies based on algorithms developed by P. Sanders and D. Schultes.

Implement a graph storage based on a database
We currently store the graph in our own set of files that facilitate quick access. We would like to have the option of storing the data in a database. Graph structures are not inherently relation so it is like that data will need to be stored in blobs of some type, but that is open to discussion. The goal of this task would be to design an appropriate structure, and write the C++ classes that would manage moving data in and out of these structures and updating them if needed.

Lots of other options
There are a lot of other possibilities that we would be happy to discuss with any students interested.

Mentor Candidates
The following individuals are potentially willing to serve as OpenRouter/pgRouting mentors or co-mentors.

* Stephen Woodbridge <woodbri (at) swoodbridge (dot) com>
* Daniel Kastl <daniel.kastl (at) georepublic (dot) de>
Testing
If no GPS is plugged in
*Double click on the GpsDrive desktop icon
*You should see a map of downtown Sydney, after about 10 seconds a waypoint marker for the Convention Centre should appear.
*Set the map scale to 1:10,000 either by dragging the slider at the bottom or by using the +,- buttons (not magnifying glass)
*Enter Explore Mode by pressing the "e" key or in the Map Control button.
*Use the arrow keys or left mouse button to move off screen.
*Right click to set destination and leave Explore Mode

Downloading maps
*Change the scale setting to 1:1,000,000 you should see a continental map
*Enter Explore Mode again ("e") and left click on the great barrier reef
*Options -> Map -> Download
**Map source: NASA LANDSAT, Scale: 1:500,000, [Download Map]
**When download is complete click [ok] then change the preferred scale slider to 1:500,000
**This will be of more use in remote areas.
*Explore to the coast, click on an airport, headland, or some other conspicuous feature. You might want to use the magnifying glass buttons to zoom in on it better. Use a right click set the target on some other conspicuous feature nearby then demagnify back out.
*Options -> Map -> Download
**Map source: OpenStreetMap, Scale: 1:150,000, left-click on map to center the green preview over your target and what looks like a populated area.
**[Download Map]
**When download is complete click [ok] then change the preferred scale slider to 1:150,000 and you should see a (rather rural) road map. This will be more interesting in built up areas.

Overlay a GPX track
*In the ~/.gpsdrive/tracks/ directory you will find australia.gpx which is a track line following the coastline.
*Options -> Import -> GPX track
*Hidden folders are hidden in the file picker, but just start typing ~/.gpsdrive and hit enter. You should then see the tracks/ directory and be able to load australia.gpx.
*A red trace should appear along the coastline.
*Check that it lines up well with the coast as shown in map tiles of varying scale.

If a GPS is plugged in
*Make sure gpsd is running by starting "xgps" from the command line.
*The program will automatically detect gpsd and jump to your current position. This should bring up a continental map as you won't have any map tiles downloaded for your area yet.
*See the above "Downloading Maps" section to get some local tiles.
*If you have a local GPX track of some roads try loading that and making sure everything lines up, as detailed in the above "Overlay a GPX track" section.

That's it.

mb-system
*Open a terminal

cd /usr/local/mbsystem/examples/

List summary information about the contents of some bathymetric data files:

cd mbinfo/
./mbinfo.cmd

Grid some sample data and then view it:

cd ../mbm_plot/
./mbm_plot_5.cmd

# which creates this script:
./mbm_plot_test5.cmd

You should now see a nice plot of the seafloor off Baja California.

*(this also acts as a test of the GMT plotting package)

mapfish
;Tested against ver 2.0

*Make sure you have a working internet connection
*Double click on the Mapfish icon on the desktop
*After a few seconds the web browser should open and you should see a map of the southwestern pacific
*Click the magnifying glass just under the word "Map" at the top of the map.
*Zoom in on Sydney
*Explore

R
* double click on the R Icon
* at the command line, type demo(graphics) and hit return
Introduction
During the FOSS4G2009 conference in Sydney, Australia, there will be conference rooms available for people to hold Birds-of-a-Feather sessions.

Birds-Of-A-Feather sessions are unstructured timeslots where people can self organise themselves to discuss topics of interest.

This year, Birds of a Feather sessions will be held on Thursday 22nd October.

A number of rooms are available. First ones in get the rooms.

Organising Contact
The rooms will be available for longer, however remember that the FOSS4G Harbour Cruise Dinner starts at 1900.

If we get a lot of demand, we may need to reduce the time that each room is available for.
This will allow us to share the resources between more people.
BOF organization
You can use this page to organize your BOF session:
* create a section below for your BOF
* have people edit this page to indicate they will be attending
* if you need a bigger room than that which has been assigned to you, let Tyler or Bruce know
* you must provide a contact person who is managing the meeting
* also make your description as clear as possible, for many attendees it will be the only thing they read before choosing one
FOSS4G in Government
To start the ball rolling, seeing that everyone else is sitting back
and waiting for everyone else: some potential discussion points:

* The UK Government's policy on Open Source It would be good to get a UK person to talk to this.
* How can governments exploit open source spatial:
* Implement based on Open Standards.
* The GeoNetwork example where we all need a Metadata entry tool and catalogue.
** We all don't want to pay for the same development, but share / pool resources.
** how do we coordinate this work, while working sensitively with Open Source communities who own the code base and may not want to go in the same direction that we do. This includes issues relating to working with Project Steering Committees etc.
** We can't expect communities to do our work for free. Therefore we will need to either engage our own people or consultancies to do the work. The consultancies could come from within the community from anywhere around the world, until we build up our own local communities. This could create procurement problems.
* The need for governments to engage with Open Source communities at all levels, not just as developers.
* The need to allow employees to participate within OS Communities as part of their day to day jobs: i.e. we need to build up our technical skills.
* The need to treat OS on a level playing field with proprietary solutions. That will mean looking at the Solution life cycle (See the new UK OS policy).
* Experiences in other countries:
** What is working.
** What is not working.
* Given national and international experiences of all, what models will work for Governments to break down the perceived barriers and myths associated with FOSS
* A plan worth considering / discussion is a proposal by the South Australian Government to implement an Australian Open Technology Foundationwhich is currently before Australian Governments, selected ICT / Open Technology Vendors and Academia for in principle support.
** Would a foundation acting as the 'common glue' assist in these endeavours
** focus on openness to improve interoperability, independence, resilience and flexibility in ICT operations
** Authorative registry of open technologies in use in Governments around Australia with appropriate learnings and contacts
** Facilitate sharing of resources, technologies and knowledge
** Link with existing programs underway nationally and internationally to share information to all
** Link with international Open Technology Groups
INSPIRE Data Profile Support in FOSS4G
We want to discuss an approach towards the upcoming INSPIRE data specifications and how to best support them in our open source software. It is important for the FOSS community to come up with a story that is more than just "Yes that is possible but contract us first".
This BOF is to seek feedback from those of you that see the same need and to investigate if some work has already been done, seek input in how we would best approach this, if there are options for a Europe wide collaboration on this etcetera.

Questions and/or points of discussions are:
* Considering that clients would like to see a product that does some of the INSPIRE data conversions out of the box, how do you approach this when usually we only implement things after they have been contracted? (in contrast to proprietary software where often an investment is made that is earned back through licensing schemes)
* Have any application schema's already been implemented in some form by you in GEOFOSS?
* What tools have you used or do you want to use (e.g. ogr, Talend, deegree, GeoServer)
* How would we go about joined development, or maybe even joined investment etcetera?
All pages of the main OSGeo Web Site should be documented to be able to track content development.
How to Document Translation
This page is a preliminary try at documenting the status of the translation of portal pages. This page is not about new content (see Open Issues above) but only to show the status of translation. It needs to be redesigned as it is ugly to maintain.

Several languages have been added to the OSGeo Portal Site. This table shows the current status of each page and lists a responsible translator. == Open Issues ==

Copy the next two lines and paste them below the last row to add a new row to your table. Add your name by using the signature tool in the toolbar.

<!-- use the default whitespaces to make the table better readable -->

Several languages have been added to the OSGeo Portal Site. This table shows the current status of each page and lists a responsible translator. Please read the Wiki section on Drupal Portal Translations to learn how you can help. If you have questions send them to the WebCom mailing list.
Open Issues
All pages of the main OSGeo Web Site should be documented to be able to track content development.

How to Document Translation
This page is a preliminary try at documenting the status of the translation of portal pages. This page is not about new content (see Open Issues above) but only to show the status of translation. It needs to be redesigned as it is ugly to maintain.

Copy the next two lines and paste them below the last row to add a new row to your table. Add your name by using the signature tool in the toolbar.

<!-- use the default whitespaces to make the table better readable -->
