Tuesday September, 26th: Steve Coast of OpenStreetmap fame is giving a talk to the BCS entitled Geospatial Open Source Activity. Details at [http://geospatial.bcs.org/site/index.php?s=future-events#3 http://geospatial.bcs.org/site/index.php?s=future-events#3]

The UK-originated [http://openguides.org/ OpenGuides] Open Source spatial wiki project is having a pub meetup and "hackfest" on the 8th-10th December also in Oxford - http://dev.openguides.org/wiki/OxfordMeetup2006

[http://openstreetmap.org/ OpenStreetmap] also have regular UK mapping parties in different cities and it could be a lot of fun to sync an OSGeo-UK meetup with an OSM mapping party.

A special interest group for archaeology would help develop both archaeology's use of open source GIS and develop archaeology's use of GIS. The latter would be helped by using open source tools that could be adapted to deal with the special requirements of archaeology GIS, in stark contrast to the proprietary tools commonly used.

I'm a freelance software developer specialising in GIS. When I'm not hacking out code, I'm either digging - yes another archaeologist - or studying for an MA at the University of London.

I'm currently on the committee of the BCS' Geospatial Specialist Group [http://geospatial.bcs.org http://geospatial.bcs.org] acting as webmaster and liasion with the AGI. I was also involved in the technical development of the MIDAS XML standard for data exchange within the heritage arena, giving a launch presentation to the Institute of Field Archaeologists annual conference in 2005.
