Hi there 👋🏾 I’m Laura, a Geospatial engineer passionate about using open technology and open data to create positive change. I currently work at Code for Africa managing africanDRONE and sensors.AFRICA community initiatives. These initiatives pioneer the use of drones and sensors for climate change and deforestation monitoring, water and air quality detection, and pollution detection in African cities, as well as open data collection and mapping.

In my free time, I volunteer with tech communities especially open data and FOSS communities! I also strongly advocate for women in STEM and continuously work with organizations pushing for diversity and inclusion within the various tech and engineering communities. Annually I organize technical workshops and events across Africa and support the implementation of similar projects globally that are aimed at empowering women in STEM.

As the saying goes, "Sharing is caring," I enjoy sharing about advances in the Geospatial space. I have organized and conducted training sessions across East Africa, and spoken and facilitated workshops at both regional and global conferences.

Also this year, after the online conference, there will be the '''OSGeo community sprint'''.

Participation is free of charge and anyone involved or interested in getting involved in OSGeo community projects is welcome.

This year we will try to offer the format '''an hour with the developer''', where we ask seasoned community members to donate time for welcoming new members and introduce them to different projects or guide them through the setup of the development environment or translation tools and get started on the Foss4G journey.

You can choose to contribute to one or more projects. The sky is the limit. There’s always plenty to do – and it’s not all about programming. Translation, documentation, feedback, discussions, and testing are very important for projects! Conference registration is not a prerequisite for participation in the code sprint.

Participation is free of charge and anyone involved or interested in getting involved in OSGeo community projects is welcome.

This year we will try to offer the format '''an hour with the developer''', where we ask seasoned community members to donate time for welcoming new members and introduce them to different projects or guide them through the setup of the development environment or translation tools and get started on the Foss4G journey.

You can choose to contribute to one or more projects. The sky is the limit. There’s always plenty to do – and it’s not all about programming. Translation, documentation, feedback, discussions, and testing are very important for projects! Conference registration is not a prerequisite for participation in the code sprint.

With a keen focus on open data and free and open-source software, she has amassed technical experience in the geospatial field while working at various organizations. She also strongly advocates for women in STEM and continuously works with organizations pushing for diversity and inclusion within the various tech and engineering communities. Annually I organize technical workshops and events across Africa and support the implementation of similar projects globally that are aimed at empowering women in STEM.
